Choosing the Right Transparent LED Screen—How to Make the Right Decision?
Transparent LED screens are a modern visual communication tool that combines dynamic imagery with the transparency of glass and storefronts. They are increasingly common in stores, shopping malls, office buildings, showrooms, and at events. However, to fully realize their potential, it is essential to select the right screen model for a specific location and intended use.
LEDmeview offers two main types of transparent LED screens: flexible FLEX LED screens and holographic HOLO LED screens. The most important factor in choosing a specific model is the viewing distance, which is directly related to the pixel pitch, as well as the screen’s transparency and price.
Pixel pitch—what does it mean, and why does it matter?
Pixel pitch refers to the distance between adjacent LEDs, expressed in millimeters. In practice, this indicates how densely the LEDs are arranged on the screen’s surface. The smaller the pixel pitch, the more detailed and legible the image is at close range. At the same time, this means a greater number of LEDs, and thus a higher price and lower transparency.
Conversely, a larger pixel pitch means a lower LED density, which makes the screen more transparent, less expensive, and better suited for viewing from a greater distance.
Viewing distance as the primary selection criterion
When choosing a transparent LED screen, the first thing to determine is the distance from which it will most often be viewed:
- LED HOLO 4 – minimum viewing distance: approx. 4 meters
- LED FLEX 5 – approx. 5 meters
- LED FLEX 6 and LED HOLO 6 – approx. 6 meters
- LED FLEX 8 – approx. 8 meters
- LED FLEX 10 – approx. 10 meters
- LED FLEX 15 – approx. 15 meters
- LED FLEX 20 – 20 meters and more
The closer the viewer is, the smaller the pixel pitch should be. At greater distances, there is no need to use higher-resolution and more expensive screens, because the difference in image quality is no longer noticeable.
Table of Approximate Viewing Distances for FLEX and LED HOLO LED Screens
| Model | Pixel pitch (mm) | Min. distance (m) | Optimal distance (m) | Examples of Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LED FLEX 5 | 5 mm | ~5 m | 5–15 m | Storefronts, shopping malls, event booths |
| LED FLEX 6 | 6 mm | ~6 m | 6–18 m | Retail Interiors, Glass Facades |
| LED FLEX 8 | 8 mm | ~8 m | 8–24 m | Medium-sized websites, branding features |
| LED FLEX 10 | 10 mm | ~10 m | 10–30 m | Large facades, street spaces |
| LED FLEX 15 | 15 mm | ~15 m | 15–45 m | Large advertising spaces, shopping mall facades |
| LED FLEX 20 | 20 mm | ~20 m | 20–60 m | Outdoor displays, buildings, large storefronts |
| HOLO 4 LED | 4 mm | ~4 m | 4–12 m | Holographic effects, showrooms, events |
| HOLO 6 LED | 6 mm | ~6 m | 6–18 m | Large-scale installations, entrance halls |
Screen Transparency and Pixel Pitch—An Important Relationship
An often-overlooked but very important aspect is the transparency of an LED screen, which also depends on the pixel pitch. The rule is clear:
the smaller the pixel pitch, the lower the screen’s transparency.
For FLEX LED screens, this relationship is as follows:
- LED FLEX 5 – transparency of approximately 92%
- LED FLEX 6 – transparency of approximately 90%
- LED FLEX 20 – transparency of approximately 95%
This means that models with a larger pixel pitch are less visible on the glass and allow more daylight to pass through.
In HOLO LED holographic screens, transparency is lower because the priority is on the spatial effect and image intensity:
- LED HOLO 4 – approximately 80% transparency
- LED HOLO 6 – transparency of approximately 85%
It is a compromise between a spectacular visual effect and the clarity of the surface.
LED FLEX or LED HOLO—which one should you choose?
LED FLEX is a versatile solution designed primarily for storefronts, glass facades, and large glass surfaces where high transparency, low weight, and flexible installation are important.
LED HOLO is a technology focused on visual impact. It works best when the screen is viewed from a closer distance and the goal is to create the impression of an image floating in space—for example, in showrooms, at events, or in prestigious exhibition areas.
How do you make the right choice?
To choose the right transparent LED screen, you need to consider three key factors:
- The actual viewing distance from the screen.
- The expected transparency of a window or display case.
- Nature of the content—should it be very detailed, or rather visual and general?
Making an informed choice involves striking a balance between image quality, clarity, and the investment budget.
Summary
Transparent LED screens—LED FLEX and LED HOLO—are technologically advanced solutions that offer tremendous visual possibilities. However, the key to success is properly matching the model to the spatial conditions and intended use. By taking into account the viewing distance, pixel pitch, and transparency, you can create an installation that not only attracts attention but also preserves the lightness and aesthetics of glass architecture.
A well-chosen LED screen doesn't dominate the space—it enhances it.
